Cape Kamui and the Shakotan coast in western Hokkaido: the headland walk, the blue water at Shimamui, and what to reconfirm before you drive out.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 30 October 2026).

Why visit

  • The Shakotan peninsula runs west from Otaru into the Sea of Japan, with a coast known for unusually clear blue water.
  • Cape Kamui is the headland at the tip, reached on foot along a ridge path above the water.
  • The area suits a long day drive from Sapporo or Otaru rather than a resort stay.

Cape Kamui

A narrow path follows the ridge to the tip. The walk is short but exposed, and the path can close in high wind or snow. Check the notices at the car park.

Shimamui coast

A steep cliff with a tunnel viewpoint over the water, close to the road.

Shakotan town

A small fishing town with sea urchin and other seafood in season. Opening varies by day and season, so reconfirm.

Food and drink

  • Seafood, especially sea urchin in early summer, is the local draw.
  • Restaurants are small and seasonal. Do not assume they are open out of season.

Getting there and around

  • By car from Otaru or Sapporo along the coastal road; the drive is the point of the trip.
  • Public transport along the peninsula is thin. Reconfirm any bus before relying on it.

Where to stay

  • Most travellers base in Otaru or Sapporo and visit on a day drive.
  • A few small guesthouses are in Shakotan and Yoichi.

Best time to visit

  • Summer and early autumn give the clearest water and the easiest driving.
  • Winter brings snow, ice and possible road closures; the cape path may be shut.

Practical tips

  • Start early: the cape car park is small and fills by mid-morning in summer.
  • Carry cash; card payment is not universal in the small towns.
  • Check road and path closures locally on the day, and treat times and fees as things to reconfirm.

Suggested day-trip outline

  1. Drive from Otaru along the coast in the morning.
  2. Stop at Shimamui, then walk Cape Kamui.
  3. Lunch in Shakotan, and return inland before the light goes.
