Sapporo Travel Guide: Food, Parks, and a Hokkaido Base
Planning Sapporo? This English guide covers Odori, the station area, what to eat, and how to use the city for other Hokkaido trips.
Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 21 October 2026).
Why visit
- Sapporo is Hokkaido’s main city. The official tourism site organizes the visit around the station, Odori, Susukino, and the parks.
- It is the practical bed for a wider trip. Otaru, Noboribetsu, and the furano hills are separate days, not a walk from the hotel.
- Winter is a real season here, with snow and a famous festival. Summer is mild and built around the park.
Top places and highlights

Odori Park
The park is a long green strip through the center, and the tourism site uses it for seasonal events from lilacs to the snow festival. The TV tower stands at one end. Check which event is occupying the park before you promise yourself an empty lawn.
The station district
Sapporo Station is the rail and subway junction. Stay or eat within a short walk if you have a morning train. Susukino, farther down the same axis, is the night street.
A day out of the city
The city is the base, not the whole of Hokkaido. One booked day trip is enough. Do not stack Otaru and an onsen town on the same afternoon.
Places to see
Addresses and official pages for the park and tower above, plus three other stops. Hours, tickets, and closed days sit on each site and can change. Reconfirm before you go.
Odori Park
The park association publishes an English guide to the layout. The park runs through central Sapporo, with subway Odori Station alongside it.
Address: Odori, Chuo-ku, Sapporo Access: Between Sapporo Station and Susukino. Get off at Odori Station. Official site: https://odori-park.jp/en/
Sapporo TV Tower
This is the tower at the end of the park. The city tourism page describes an observation deck about 90 meters up. Tickets are sold inside the building. Read that day’s hours on the operator site.
Address: Odori Nishi 1-chome, Chuo-ku, Sapporo Access: East end of Odori Park. Official site: https://www.tv-tower.co.jp/en/
Sapporo Clock Tower
A wooden museum in a building opened in 1878 as the drill hall of Sapporo Agricultural College. It is a national important cultural property. Read hours, admission, and closed days on the Japanese page, and reconfirm them. The English page on the same site still mentions a painting closure from 2018, so use the Japanese page for the calendar.
Address: Kita 1-jo Nishi 2-chome, Chuo-ku, Sapporo Access: About 10 minutes on foot from the south exit of JR Sapporo Station, or about 5 minutes from Odori Station’s city-hall exit. Official site: https://sapporoshi-tokeidai.jp/
Former Hokkaido Government Office
The red-brick former headquarters, finished in 1888 and kept as a national important cultural property. Exhibits fill the building, and a separate balcony visit in the octagonal tower is listed as a reserved trip with stairs. Hours, admission, and that balcony visit are on the official page. Reconfirm them.
Address: Kita 3-jo Nishi 6-chome 1, Chuo-ku, Sapporo Access: About 8 minutes on foot from JR Sapporo Station’s West-dori south exit, about 4 minutes from Sapporo Station exit 10, or about 9 minutes from Odori Station exit 2. Official site: https://www.hokkaido-redbrick.jp/information/
Shiroi Koibito Park
Ishiya’s chocolate park is in Nishi ward, a subway ride from the center rather than a walk from Odori. The access page says there is no free shuttle from the park, and its description puts Miyanosawa Station on the Tozai line about a 5-minute walk away. Admission and hours are on the official site. Reconfirm them.
Address: Miyanosawa 2-jo 2-chome 11-36, Nishi-ku, Sapporo Access: Tozai subway line to Miyanosawa, then a short walk. Official site: https://www.shiroikoibitopark.jp/park-guide/access.html
Food and drink
- Plan a meal, not a checklist. Miso ramen, soup curry, and grilled lamb are the local plates the tourism site groups under Sapporo food. Kitchens set their own hours.
- The station basements and Odori have the easiest lunch. A famous shop can sell out. Eat when you are hungry rather than saving every meal for one alley.
Where to eat
Four shops for the plates above: soup curry, miso ramen, jingisukan, and a seafood bowl. Each page posts its own hours and any closure. Reconfirm the day you go.
Soup Curry Suage 4
Soup curry on the 2nd floor of the Daido Seimei Building miredo, a short walk north of Odori. The menu includes chicken, vegetables, and jingisukan in the soup. The shop says it does not take reservations. Read the posted hours before you go. They can follow the building’s calendar.
Address: Daido Seimei Building miredo 2F, Kita 3-jo Nishi 3-chome 1-1, Chuo-ku, Sapporo Access: Just north of Odori. The shop lists no parking of its own. Official site: https://suage.info/stores/suage4/
Sumire Susukino
Miso ramen on the 2nd floor of the Pixis Building in Susukino. The shop list says the hours can change. Check the official site for the latest hours and any closure before you visit.
Address: Pixis Building 2F, Minami 3-jo Nishi 3-chome 9-2, Chuo-ku, Sapporo Access: Susukino, south of Odori. Official site: http://www.sumireya.com/main/mainshop/
Jingisukan Daruma main shop
The Susukino main shop of Daruma, which dates itself to 1954. Mutton is grilled on charcoal, and the sauce goes on after cooking. The page lists 14 counter seats and says it does not take reservations. It also says an evening wait is common. Read the current hours and any holiday closure on the shop page.
Address: Crystal Building 1F, Minami 5-jo Nishi 4-chome, Chuo-ku, Sapporo Access: Susukino. The shop says it has no parking. Official site: https://sapporo-jingisukan.info/main
Donburi Chaya Nijo Market
Seafood rice bowls inside Shin-Nijo Market, from a fish seller. The page names salmon roe, crab, sea urchin, and shrimp, and says it does not take reservations. It is a daytime stop. Seasonal hours are on the shop page. Reconfirm them.
Address: Shin-Nijo Market, Minami 3-jo Higashi 1-chome 7, Chuo-ku, Sapporo Access: Nijo Market, on the Sosei River side of downtown. Drivers use a nearby paid car park. Official site: https://donburi.jp/shop/nijo
Getting there and around
- The ride to book is the rapid train between New Chitose Airport and Sapporo Station. Reconfirm the last one if your flight is late.
- Downtown is a subway grid. An IC card is the simple way to ride. JR and the subway are different companies, so check that the card you hold actually works on both.
- Out-of-town buses and trains leave from different places around the station. Read the bay number, not just the city name.
Where to stay
- Sleep near Sapporo Station if the next morning is an airport or a long-distance train. Sleep near Odori if the park and dinner are the point.
- Festival weeks and long weekends fill the central hotels. Book the night before you need the room. A cheaper bed in a distant ward costs a subway ride you may not want in the snow.
Three hotels for that choice. Rates are on each official site. Reconfirm the room and how you will arrive.
JR Tower Hotel Nikko Sapporo
A hotel inside JR Tower, connected to JR Sapporo Station. The English page places the rooms high in the tower and posts an age rule for the spa. It also says station-area construction can mean noise and a changed route for taxis. Read that notice before you book.
Address: Kita 5-jo Nishi 2-chome 5, Chuo-ku, Sapporo Access: Connected to JR Sapporo Station. Official site: https://www.jrhotels.co.jp/tower/english/
Sapporo Grand Hotel
The hotel’s English page calls it Hokkaido’s first genuine Western-style hotel and dates the opening to December 1934. It sits beside Odori, with an underground walkway toward the station.
Address: Kita 1-jo Nishi 4-chome, Chuo-ku, Sapporo Access: About 5 minutes on foot from Odori Station, or about 10 minutes from JR Sapporo Station. Official site: https://grand1934.com/en/
Cross Hotel Sapporo
A hotel with a breakfast buffet and a public bath looking over the city. The official page describes 181 rooms and a walk of about 5 minutes from Sapporo Station. Breakfast and bath hours are on that site. Reconfirm them.
Address: Kita 2-jo Nishi 2-chome 23, Chuo-ku, Sapporo Access: About 5 minutes on foot from Sapporo Station. Official site: https://cross-sapporo.orixhotelsandresorts.com/
Best time to visit
- Winter is cold, snowy, and the busy festival season. The tourism site lists the snow festival in its winter events. Dates move. Reconfirm.
- June through August is the mild park season, with lilacs early and long evenings. Shoulder months are easier for a room.
Practical tips
- Read the city’s traveler notices. The tourism site keeps a news list for service changes.
- The canal town west of here is the Otaru travel guide. It is a separate day.
Suggested day-trip outline
- Airport train to Sapporo Station and a hotel you can walk back to.
- Odori, one proper meal, and the tower only if the weather is clear.
- A booked day trip, or a second day in the city if the weather turns.
