Why visit
- Chatan is a town on the west coast of Okinawa’s main island, just north of Naha, and it is where the island’s sunsets are watched. The seafront faces west across the East China Sea, and the long promenade and the beaches fill in the evening with people waiting for the sun to go down.
- Behind the resort strip, the town has an older history. The hill of Chatan castle and the old tomb sites record the Ryukyu period, and the small streets have shrines and houses that predate the hotels. It is a place where the two Okinawas, the resort and the old kingdom, sit side by side.
- Chatan is close to Naha and the airport, which makes it a practical base, and it is a short drive from the American Village and the northern beaches.
