Why visit
- Kamiamakusa is a city in the islands of the Yatsushiro sea, in western Kumamoto, made up of a group of islands joined by bridges. It is a place of fishing, terraced fields and small harbours, with the sea always in view and the mountains of Amakusa on the horizon.
- The bridges are the practical fact of the place: the Amakusa islands are joined to the mainland by a chain of crossings, which makes the city reachable by road and gives the drive its character, with water on both sides and the islands unfolding ahead.
- It is quiet country, with seafood, sea views and onsen, and it is far from the crowds of the better-known parts of Kyushu, which is the point of coming.
