A practical English guide to Motobu in northern Okinawa: the Churaumi aquarium, the Bise fukugi trees, the coast and access from Naha.
Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).
Why visit
- Motobu is the town at the heart of the northern Okinawan peninsula, and it holds the island’s biggest visitor attraction: the Churaumi aquarium, with its vast tank of whale sharks and manta rays. Around it are beaches, a coastline of coral and rock, and the village of Bise, where lanes are lined with old fukugi trees.
- The peninsula is greener and steeper than the south, with forest, small farms and views across the water to the islands. It is also the base for trips to the northern reefs and to the nearby castle ruins at Nakijin.
- Motobu is busy in the middle of the day, when the aquarium and the beaches fill up, but early mornings and evenings are quiet, and the coast road north is one of the most pleasant drives on the island.
