Why visit

  • Uwajima is a castle town on the western coast of Ehime, facing the Bungo channel, and it has one of the twelve castle keeps in Japan that survive from the pre-modern period. The keep sits on a hill above the town, small and steep, with the sea and the mountains visible from the top.
  • The town is also known for bull sumo, in which two bulls are brought together in a ring and push until one gives way. It is held on a handful of days through the year, and the ring is a short trip from the centre. The other local obsession is sea bream, served as taimeshi, a rice dish with raw fish and a soy-based sauce.
  • Uwajima is a working provincial city with a lively covered shopping street, several temples and a Date clan history, and it is far enough from the main Shikoku route to stay quiet.
