Why visit

  • Yaese is a town in the south of Okinawa’s main island, inland from the coast and away from the resort strip. It is farming country, with fields of sugarcane and vegetables, low hills and small settlements, and it feels like the ordinary Okinawa that most visitors pass through without stopping.
  • The town is known locally for its festivals and its community life, with events through the year and a landscape of farms and old paths. The south of the island also holds the sites of the war and the peace memorials, which are a short drive away.
  • Yaese is close to Naha and to the southern coast, which makes it a practical base for the quieter end of the island, with far fewer visitors than the north.
