Planning a trip to Ishigaki in the Yaeyama Islands? This English guide covers beaches, the town, ferries onward, and what to reconfirm before you go.
Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 21 October 2026).
Why visit
- Ishigaki is the main island of the Yaeyama group and the usual base for ferries to Taketomi and Iriomote.
- The town, the north-coast bays, and the beaches are spread out. A day without a bus plan or a car stays near the port.
- It is a longer flight from the main Okinawa island, so build in a buffer before any same-day connection.
Top places and highlights

Ishigaki town and the port
Ferries, dinner, and the bus terminal sit in the town. Confirm which pier your boat uses.
The Ishigaki City page for the remote-island terminal places it at 1 Misaki-cho, Ishigaki. The page names that building for ferries to Taketomi, Iriomote, Kuroshima, Kohama, and Hatomajima. Office hours are on the page. This guide does not copy them.
North-coast bays
Kabira and other bays are the usual scenic stops. Swimming rules differ by beach—follow the local notice rather than assuming every bay is open.
The Kabira Marine Service page places its desk at 912-1 Kabira, Ishigaki. It describes a drive of about 30 minutes from the remote-island terminal and about 40 minutes from the airport, and a walk of about one minute from the Kabira Park bus stop. Hours and parking fees are on that page. This guide does not copy them.
Beaches and cape roads
The southern and western coasts take longer than the map suggests. Shops thin out once you leave town.
Food and drink
- Restaurants concentrate in town. Resort dinners often need a booking.
- Ishigaki beef appears on menus. Confirm a place is open before you drive out for one meal.
Getting there and around
- Flights land at Painushima Ishigaki Airport, well outside town. Buses and taxis cover the gap—reconfirm the last bus if you arrive late.
- Ferries to Taketomi and Iriomote leave from the town port. Wind cancels them. Check the morning board before you plan the outer island.
- A rental car covers the capes. The bus network is enough for the main bays if you accept the timetable.
Where to stay
- Two nights is a practical minimum if an outer island is also on the list.
- Stay in town if you want restaurants and the early ferry. Stay on the north coast if the bay itself is the point.
Best time to visit
- Summer is the swimming season, with strong sun and typhoon risk.
- Winter is milder for walking and cycling, and less reliable for long swims.
Practical tips
- Do not book a flight off Ishigaki on the same afternoon as a last ferry from another island.
- Reef-safe habits and the day’s sea notice come first.
- The short hop to a car-free village is the Taketomi travel guide.
- The jungle island on those same ferries is the Iriomote travel guide.
Suggested day-trip outline
- Fly in and confirm the ferry board if an outer island is planned.
- One bay or beach you can leave in time.
- Evening in town, with the next morning’s boat already checked.
