Planning a trip to Miyako Island? This English guide covers beaches, the bridges to Irabu, how to get there, and what to reconfirm before you go.
Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 21 October 2026).
Why visit
- Miyako is a low island east of the main Okinawa island, known for long beaches and bridges that link Miyako with Irabu and Shimojishima.
- It suits travelers who want several beach days rather than a single ferry afternoon.
- Public transport exists, but beach time is easier to plan if you confirm buses or a rental car before you land.
Top places and highlights

Yonaha Maehama and nearby beaches
The west-coast beach is the usual first stop. Swimming flags and jellyfish notices change—follow the day’s local guidance.
Irabu and the bridges
Bridges connect Miyako with Irabu. Scenic stops are exposed to wind. Confirm whether your bus or rental car is allowed to pause there.
Ikema and the north
A causeway reaches Ikema. Shops and crossings are limited, so treat it as a short out-and-back.
Places to see
Five places from the Miyako tourism association. Lengths and beach conditions can change. Reconfirm them, and follow the day’s sea notice.
Maehama Beach
The association page places this beach at Shimozato Yonaha, with Kurima island offshore, and describes about 7 kilometers of sand. Follow the swimming flags already noted above.
Address: Shimozato Yonaha 1199, Miyakojima, Okinawa Access: On the west coast. Use a car or a bus you have confirmed. Tourism association: https://miyako-guide.net/spots/spots-785/
Irabu Bridge
The bridge between Miyako and Irabu. The association page gives the length as 3,540 meters and the opening as January 2015.

Address: Between Miyako and Ikema, Okinawa Access: A drive to the north of the island. Tourism association: https://miyako-guide.net/spots/spots-893/

Address: Between Miyako and Kurima, Okinawa Access: South of Maehama Beach. Tourism association: https://miyako-guide.net/spots/spots-881/
Higashi-henna-zaki
The cape at the eastern end of Miyako. The association page describes a cape of about 2 kilometers and a drive of about 35 minutes from Miyako Airport, and it lists parking. Check that page for any current shore notice before you walk the path.
Address: Eastern cape of Miyako, Okinawa Access: By car from Miyako Airport. The association page gives the drive as about 35 minutes. Reconfirm. Tourism association: https://miyako-guide.net/spots/spots-866/
Food and drink
- Island restaurants are spread out, not lined up along every beach.
- Miyako beef and soba appear on local menus. Hours vary, especially outside town—confirm before you drive out for a meal.
Where to eat
One cafe with its own site. Hours are on that page. Reconfirm them.
Kuninaka Shoten
A coffee and bread cafe on Irabu. The shop page gives the address and says the drive from Shimojijima Airport is about five minutes.
Address: Irabu, Kuninaka 531-1, Miyakojima, Okinawa Access: On Irabu, a short drive from Shimojijima Airport. Official site: https://kuninaka-shoten.com/
Getting there and around
- Most visitors fly into Miyako Airport from Naha or the mainland. Flight time and which airlines operate should be reconfirmed.
- Ferries from other islands are much slower and weather-dependent. Do not treat a ferry as a backup for a same-day flight unless the operator says it is running.
- Buses serve some beaches. A rental car covers more, including Irabu. License rules and driving orientation should be confirmed with the rental company.
Where to stay
- Two or three nights match the beaches better than a day trip.
- Stay near Hirara if you want restaurants without a car, or nearer the west coast if the beach is the point of the trip.
Two stays. Every fact below is from the Miyako tourism association, checked on 22 October 2026. This section does not add a booking link.
Hotel Shigira Mirage Beachfront
A beachfront hotel in front of Shigira Beach. The association page gives the address, says each room has a kitchen, and lists an airport shuttle. Reconfirm the shuttle before you rely on it.
Address: Ueno, Niizato 1405-271, Miyakojima, Okinawa Access: In front of Shigira Beach. Tourism association: https://miyako-guide.net/spots/spots-9120/
Guesthouse ONE Miyakojima
A small guesthouse in central Hirara, on the third floor of the Ebisu Building. The address is from the tourism association page.
Address: Hirara Nishizato 329, Ebisu Building 3F, Miyakojima, Okinawa Access: In Hirara. Tourism association: https://miyako-guide.net/spots/spots-9191/
Best time to visit
- Late spring through autumn is the swimming season, with strong sun and typhoon risk.
- Winter is pleasant for cycling and coast walks, and less reliable for long swims.
Practical tips
- Reef-safe habits and the day’s sea notice come before a photo stop.
- Fuel stations and shops thin out toward Irabu. Fill up in town.
- If you are comparing island styles, the Zamami travel guide is a short ferry from Naha rather than its own airport.
Suggested day-trip outline
- Fly to Miyako and settle the bus or car for the next morning.
- One west-coast beach, then a bridge crossing only if the weather is calm.
- Keep the last day light in case a flight moves.
