Clear coastal water and a village harbor on Zamami Island, Okinawa, Japan

Zamami Travel Guide: Kerama Islands, Clear Water, and a Ferry from Naha

Planning a trip to Zamami in the Kerama Islands? This English guide covers ferry access from Naha, village walks, sea conditions, whale-watching season, and what to reconfirm before you go.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 22 October 2026).

Why visit

  • Zamami is a small island in the Kerama group west of Okinawa Island, visited for clear water, short coastal walks, and a slower pace than Naha.
  • A ferry from the Tomari port area is the practical way in. Day trips are possible only when the return sailing leaves enough time.
  • It is the specific island stop to add after a general Okinawa stay, rather than another overview of the main island.

Zamami village and harbor

The ferry arrives at the village. Shops, bike rentals, and the information desk are concentrated here. Services shrink on weekdays and in rough-weather weeks.

Coastal lookouts and beaches

Furuzamami and other beaches are a walk, bus, or rental cycle from the port. Swimming conditions depend on wind and marine notices—follow the day’s flag and local guidance.

Seasonal whale watching

Boat trips to see humpback whales run in the winter-to-spring window and are cancelled in poor seas. Confirm the current season and the operator’s sailing before you build a day around it.

Food and drink

  • Cafes and small restaurants in the village serve lunch, with fewer choices in the evening if you are on a day trip that should not stay that late.
  • Island kitchens can close when the ferry is cancelled. Do not count on a specific restaurant being open.

Getting there and around

  • High-speed ferries and larger car ferries serve Zamami from Naha’s Tomari area. Which boat runs, and how long it takes, depends on the service—reconfirm the operator timetable.
  • The two boats leave from opposite banks of Tomari port: the car ferry from the south side beside the Tomarin building, the fast boat from the north side. The fast boat crosses in well under an hour, the ferry takes about two, so the choice decides how much of the day is left on the island.
  • Bookings open one month before the sailing date, by phone or online, and summer sailings sell out. Passengers on the fast boat are limited to two pieces of luggage.
  • Wind regularly cancels or delays Kerama sailings. Check the morning status before you leave your hotel, and do not book a flight the same afternoon as a last-boat return.
  • On the island, walking, a village bus, and rental cycles cover the usual sights. Fares and rental rules should be confirmed at the port.

Where to stay

  • A day trip works when both the outbound and return ferries are running and you accept a short window on the island.
  • The fast boat goes into dry dock for annual maintenance, usually in autumn, and then only the slow ferry runs. A day trip planned around a 50-minute crossing becomes a four-hour round trip, so check which boat is actually operating for your dates before booking anything else.
  • One night gives you a morning swim and protection against a cancelled afternoon boat. Guesthouses are small—reserve and reconfirm the ferry together.

Best time to visit

  • Summer is the main swimming season, with strong sun and typhoon risk. A typhoon cancels ferries; build a flexible day.
  • Winter is cooler for swimming and is the season associated with whale-watching trips. Exact start and end dates change—confirm for that year.

Practical tips

  • Put reef-safe habits and the day’s sea notice ahead of a photo stop.
  • If the morning boat is cancelled, switch to a main-island plan instead of waiting at the port all day.
  • For the rest of the prefecture, start with the Okinawa travel guide.

Suggested day-trip outline

  1. Morning ferry from Naha after checking that the return boat is on the board.
  2. Village stop, then one beach or lookout you can leave in time.
  3. Return ferry, with an overnight already booked if the sea looks uncertain.
