Planning a trip to Shodoshima in Kagawa? This English guide covers ferries, the coast, olive country, and what to reconfirm before you go.
Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 21 October 2026).
Why visit
- Shodoshima is an island in the Seto Inland Sea, reached by ferry and known for olive groves, a coastal road, and a sandbar that appears at low tide.
- It is a full day from Takamatsu, or an easy overnight. The island is larger than a harbor stroll.
- Buses exist. A rental bicycle or car covers more of the coast if you confirm the rental desk is open when your ferry lands.
Top places and highlights

Olive Park and the groves
The terraces are the usual first stop. Shops and the viewpoint have their own hours—confirm if you are arriving on the first or last ferry.
Angel Road
The sandbar to a small islet is walkable only around low tide. The day’s tide, not a postcard, decides whether you can cross. Reconfirm locally.
The sandbar is a short bus ride from Tonosho port: get off at the International Hotel stop and walk about three minutes. The Tonosho town office and the ferry company both publish tide tables for the year, so the crossing window can be checked before the boat lands instead of guessed on the beach.
Kankakei and the coast
Kankakei is the island’s gorge and lookout. Fishing ports sit along the coast. Pick one or two stops rather than trying to loop the whole island between boats.
Kankakei has its own approach. From Tonosho port the bus toward Kusakabe takes about an hour; at Kusakabe port the free shuttle runs to Kounkaku at the ropeway base, and the ropeway covers the last climb. Check the shuttle dates, because it is listed as a seasonal service.
Food and drink
- Olive dishes and somen are the local specialties. Restaurants cluster in the port towns.
- Kitchens can close between lunch and the evening ferry. Eat when you see an open room.
Getting there and around
- Ferries run from Takamatsu, and also from Okayama and other ports depending on the operator. The landing port on the island is not always the same—reconfirm which one your ticket uses.
- Wind delays Inland Sea boats less often than the outer islands, but the last boat still matters.
- Island buses meet some ferries and not others. A taxi or rental is the backup. Fares should be checked on the day.
Where to stay
- A day trip from Takamatsu works if you accept one area, not the whole island.
- A night in a port inn makes the evening coast and an early olive-grove visit possible.
Best time to visit
- Spring and autumn are the comfortable seasons for the coast road.
- Summer is hot and bright. The sandbar is a sun trap with no shade.
Practical tips
- Check the tide before you promise yourself the sandbar.
- Olive-oil tastings are optional. The groves and the coast are the island.
- Takamatsu, the usual ferry port, is covered in the Ritsurin Garden guide. Art-island ferries from a different port are in the Naoshima guide.
Suggested day-trip outline
- Ferry to the port on your ticket.
- One grove and the sandbar only if the tide fits.
- Return boat, or an overnight in the port.
