A practical English guide to Tomigusuku in Okinawa: the wartime sites, the coast and access from Naha.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 08 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Tomigusuku is a city just south of Naha, on the coast and the hills that run down towards the peace memorial park. It is a residential and commercial city, but it also holds important sites from the battle of Okinawa, including the underground navy headquarters that is open to visitors.
  • Beyond the history, Tomigusuku has a coast of harbours and wetlands, including Lake Man, and a landscape of low hills and suburbs. It is close enough to Naha to be part of the capital’s daily life, and far enough to have its own character.
  • Tomigusuku is a short drive or bus from Naha airport and the city centre, which makes it an easy half-day trip, and a practical stop on the way to the southern memorial sites.
