Why visit
- Hioki is a city on the west coast of the Satsuma peninsula, west of Kagoshima city, and it is a place of fishing, farming and quiet shores. The coast faces the East China Sea, with beaches, birdlife and small harbours.
- Inland the city has temples, fields and a landscape of low hills, and it is far less visited than the better-known parts of Kagoshima. It is a good place to see the ordinary life of the peninsula, with seafood, countryside and sea views.
- Hioki is close to Kagoshima city and the airport, which makes it an easy half-day trip, and a practical base for the west coast of Satsuma.
