Planning Amanohashidate? This English guide covers the sandbar, the view, and the 2026 lift and boat notices.
Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 21 October 2026).
Why visit
- Amanohashidate is a pine-covered sandbar across Miyazu Bay in northern Kyoto Prefecture. The tourism association calls it one of the three famous views of Japan, with Matsushima and Miyajima.
- The association says the bar is about 3.6 kilometers long and about 20 to 170 meters wide, with about 5,400 pines. The shape is the visit. A shrine and a park viewpoint sit at the ends.
- Transport on the bar changes. On 5 October 2026 the association posted an October suspension of the Viewland lift. A bridge repair has also been delaying boat passage. Bus times were revised on 1 October 2026. Reconfirm all three.
Top places and highlights

The sandbar
Walk or cycle the pines only on the path the site allows. The classic picture is from the viewpoint above one end, not from the middle of the trees.
The viewpoint
Kasamatsu Park is the usual lookout. If the lift or the cable is stopped, the walk is longer. Read the October notice rather than assuming the ride is running.
The two lookouts face the bar from opposite ends. View Land is the station end, about a five-minute walk from Amanohashidate Station, with a lift up in about six minutes and a monorail in about seven that leaves every 20 minutes; the upside-down view from there is called Hiryukan. Kasamatsu Park is the far end, up by cable car in about four minutes or a lift in about seven and a half, and its version is Shoryukan. On the bar itself, the 3.6 kilometers take about 50 minutes on foot or about 20 by rental cycle, and the sightseeing boat links the two ends in about 12 minutes.
The bay
Sightseeing boats cross or cruise when the channel is open. A posted stoppage means they do not. Reconfirm the morning you go.
Food and drink
- Eat in Miyazu or Amanohashidate station before the walk. Shops on the bar are limited.
- Seafood grills are the local meal. Hours are their own.
Getting there and around
- The ride to book is the Kyoto Tango Railway to Amanohashidate. From Kyoto station the trip takes a reserved seat and a change. From Osaka, go through Kyoto. Reconfirm the limited express.
- Local buses and the small loop bus were on a new timetable from October 2026. Do not use a summer blog for the return.
- A car needs the parking the association lists. The sandbar itself is not a driving route.
Where to stay
- Sleep in Miyazu if you want the bar in the morning light. Kyoto is possible as a long day and a poor sunset plan.
- Ine and the boat villages are a different reservation up the same coast. Do not expect them outside the door.
Best time to visit
- The pines are the view in every season. Cherry blossom and autumn color add crowds.
- Winter wind on the bar is the reason to check the boat before you leave Kyoto.
Practical tips
- Check the lift, the boat channel, and the bus the day before.
- Another of the three famous views, already a shrine island, is the Miyajima travel guide.
Suggested day-trip outline
- Train to Amanohashidate.
- The viewpoint that is actually open, then the sandbar path.
- The return train you already checked.
