Planning Chichibu in Saitama? This English guide covers the shrine, the night festival, the hills, and the alerts to reconfirm.
Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 22 October 2026).
Why visit
- Chichibu is a mountain town in western Saitama, on the way into the hills rather than another Tokyo suburb.
- Chichibu Shrine is the center of town. Its night festival is the famous night, and the shrine publishes the date. It is a winter night of floats, not a weekly event.
- The rest of the year is the shrine, a spring hillside of flowers, and walks that need a bear check. On 21 October 2026 the city was posting bear sightings, including in the Arakawa area.
Top places and highlights

Chichibu Shrine
The shrine sits in the town and lists the Chichibu Night Festival among its rites. Go for the buildings on an ordinary day. Go for the floats only when the shrine says the festival is on. Crowds and night buses are the constraint. Reconfirm.
The dates are fixed rather than moved. 2 December is the eve, when four floats are pulled around the main street from mid-morning. 3 December brings six floats out from early morning and the procession in the evening. The climb up Dangozaka is the climax and is effectively reserved seating, so plan to watch elsewhere unless you hold a seat.
The spring hillside
Hitsujiyama Park covers a slope in moss phlox, and that week fills the town. The bloom moves. Read the city’s seasonal notice rather than a fixed April date.
The hills
Trails and gorges sit outside the station. The city posts bear alerts and road notices. A forest walk on a day with a fresh sighting is a bad plan. Stay in town if the alert is active.
Food and drink
- Eat near the station or the shrine street. Mountain shops close early, and festival nights run out of seats.
- Do not count on a meal at a trailhead. Carry water if you leave town.
Getting there and around
- The ride to book is the Seibu line from the Tokyo side to Seibu-Chichibu, or the Chichibu Railway if you are coming across the mountains. Reconfirm which station your hotel uses. They are not the same platform.
- From Ikebukuro the Seibu limited express runs through to Seibu-Chichibu in about 80 minutes, and that station is about 15 minutes on foot from the shrine. The Chichibu Railway’s Chichibu Station is a different station, about 3 minutes from the shrine, so check which line your route uses.
- Local buses change. The city has already retired at least one tourist bus route. Do not trust an old timetable.
- Festival night needs the return you booked before you arrive. The last train is the visit’s real ending.
Where to stay
- Sleep in Chichibu if the festival or an early hike is the point. A day trip from Tokyo works on an ordinary Saturday and is tight.
- A hotel by Seibu-Chichibu Station is the simple base. The shrine is a walk or a short ride from there.
Best time to visit
- Spring flower weekends and the winter night festival are the two crowds. Summer is green and humid in the valley.
- Autumn color is a reason to come, and it is also when bears are in the news. Read the city page.
Practical tips
- Check the bear alert and the festival date the day you leave Tokyo.
- The warehouse town closer to the city is the Kawagoe travel guide. Chichibu is the mountain day.
Suggested day-trip outline
- Train to Seibu-Chichibu.
- The shrine, and the hillside if the flowers are actually out.
- A short walk only if the city alert is quiet, then the train you already checked.
