Planning Oboke in Tokushima? This English guide covers the gorge, the boat, and the train, and keeps it separate from the Iya Valley.
Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 21 October 2026).
Why visit
- Oboke and Koboke are a pair of gorges on the Yoshino River in Miyoshi, Tokushima. The tourism site describes cliffs of crystalline schist and a seasonal pleasure boat.
- The same site says Oboke was designated a natural monument in 2014 and a place of scenic beauty in 2015, with Koboke added in 2018 so the pair share that scenic designation.
- This is not the Iya Valley. Iya is the next mountain walk. Oboke is the river.
Top places and highlights

The gorge
Koboke sits about 3 kilometers downstream and is smaller, with its own rock. Most visitors do one boat or one riverside stop, not both on foot.
The boat
The pleasure boat is the usual way to see the cliffs from the water. It is seasonal and it cancels in bad weather or low water. Reconfirm the day you travel. Do not treat a webpage photo as a sailing.
The station walk
The tourism site says Oboke Station is about a 30 minute walk from Oboke gorge and about an hour on foot from Koboke, or a short drive. The times move with the path you choose. Reconfirm.
The Miyoshi tourism page for the boat lists the landing at 1520 Yamashiro-cho Nishiu, Miyoshi, and describes a walk of about 25 minutes from JR Oboke Station, or a bus to the Oboke Gorge stop. The cruise is about 30 minutes and returns to the same landing. Read the operator page for the day’s sailings.
Food and drink
- Eat near Oboke Station. Riverside shops are seasonal.
- Do not count on a meal on the boat. Carry water.
Getting there and around
- The ride to book is the JR Dosan Line to Oboke. From Osaka, the day runs through Okayama or Kochi connections. Reconfirm the limited express.
- The tourism site describes a drive of about 30 minutes from the Ikawa-Ikeda interchange. A car helps if you want both gorges. The train is enough for Oboke itself.
- Iya Valley buses are a different timetable. Do not miss the return train because a gorge walk ran long.
Where to stay
- Sleep in Miyoshi or Oboke if the morning boat is the point. A day trip from Takamatsu or Kochi is tight.
- Book the room after you know whether the boat is running. A cancelled sailing is still a gorge, but it is a different day.
Best time to visit
- Spring blossom and autumn color are the two reasons the tourism site gives for the cliffs.
- Summer boats are the busy weeks. Winter water and wind can stop them. Read the operator that morning.
Practical tips
- Keep Oboke and the Iya vine bridges as two visits.
- The mountain walk next door is the Iya Valley travel guide.
- The Dosan Line continues south to the Kochi Castle travel guide.
- The other Tokushima stop, at the eastern end of the prefecture on the Inland Sea, is the Naruto whirlpools travel guide .
Suggested day-trip outline
- Train to Oboke.
- The gorge, and the boat only if it is actually running.
- Back to the station for the train you already checked.
