The original keep of Uwajima Castle in Ehime

Uwajima Castle Travel Guide: A Small Original Keep above the Port

Planning Uwajima Castle in Ehime? This English guide covers the original keep, the path closures, and the ride from Matsuyama.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 21 October 2026).

Why visit

  • Uwajima Castle is a small original keep on a hill above the port of Uwajima, in Ehime. The city treats the tower as one of the twelve surviving keeps.
  • It is not Matsuyama Castle. Matsuyama is a larger original keep farther up the same coast. This one is the Date family’s compact tower.
  • Paths on the hill were changing through 2026. The city reopened part of the south approach from 1 August 2026 and left the spur toward the children’s park closed. The north gatehouse is under repair into 2027. Walking is allowed. Cars are not.

The keep

The tower is the visit. It is an Important Cultural Property and an original building. The city sells the castle stamp inside the keep, with a ground-level exception only for visitors who cannot climb.

The Uwajima City guide places the castle in Marunouchi. From JR Uwajima Station it describes a walk of about 15 minutes, about 1 km, and about 35 minutes to the keep. Hours and admission are on that page. This guide does not copy them.

The paths

Use the route the city has marked open. The south path and the north path are not interchangeable while the repairs last. Reconfirm on the morning you go.

The port town

The hill sits in the middle of Uwajima. The harbor and the streets are the rest of the day, not a second castle.

Food and drink

  • Eat in Uwajima. The keep is a climb, not a meal.
  • Port shops close early on a quiet weekday. Eat when you are hungry.

Getting there and around

  • The ride to book is the JR limited express along the Yosan Line from Matsuyama. Local trains take longer. Reconfirm which one you hold.
  • From Osaka the day is long. Stay in Matsuyama or Uwajima rather than trying to return the same evening.
  • The station is in town. The open path is the rest of the walk. Do not drive up to the north gate while the gatehouse is under repair.

Where to stay

  • Sleep in Uwajima if the keep is the point. Matsuyama is the larger hotel town and a different castle.
  • A path closure does not cancel the town. Keep the hotel even if the tower’s route changes.

Best time to visit

  • Cherry blossom is the crowded week on the hill. Summer is bright and humid on the stone.
  • Typhoon rain can close a path that was open the day before. Read the city notice.

Practical tips

Suggested day-trip outline

  1. Train from Matsuyama to Uwajima.
