Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).
Why visit
- Kanoya is a city in southern Kagoshima, on the Osumi peninsula, and it is known for aviation. The air base here was one of the largest in the Japanese empire, and the city’s museum records that history with aircraft, documents and personal stories.
- The base is still active, and the museum is a place of national memory as well as technical interest, with displays on the pilots and the aircraft of the period. It is presented carefully, as a record rather than a celebration.
- Kanoya also has a large rose garden, warm winters and a coast on the bay, and it is a base for the surrounding countryside of southern Kagoshima.
