Why visit
- Saiki is a small city on the coast of southern Oita, where the Bungo channel opens towards Kyushu’s south. It was a castle town, and the stone walls of the castle still stand on the hill above the centre, with a park and a view over the roofs towards the sea.
- The city is known for sushi, and not in a casual way: the local style uses fish from the nearby waters, and the town has a concentration of sushi restaurants that is unusual for its size. The port and the market supply them, and the tradition goes back generations.
- Saiki is on the Nippo main line between Oita and Miyazaki, and it is close to the coast and the mountains, with quiet roads and a slower pace than the cities on either side.
