A practical English guide to Nobeoka in Miyazaki: the castle ruins, the river and its ayu fishing, and access from Miyazaki and Oita.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Nobeoka is a city in northern Miyazaki, built where the Gokase river comes down from the mountains to the coast. It grew around a castle, and the stone walls of that castle still stand on a hill above the town, with a park and a museum around them.
  • The river is the other half of the city’s identity. Ayu, the small sweetfish that lives in clear, fast water, is caught here in summer, and the city has built a food culture around it. In the warmer months, fishing platforms and riverside restaurants appear along the water.
  • Nobeoka is a practical stop on the Nippo main line between Miyazaki and Oita, with industrial works along the coast and mountains inland. It is not a resort, but it has a strong sense of place and some of the best river scenery in Kyushu.
