A practical English guide to Naha in Okinawa: the markets, Shuri Castle area and access from the airport.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 08 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Naha is the capital of Okinawa and the main arrival city for the islands. It has the markets of Heiwa-dori and Makishi, the monorail, the reconstructed Shuri Castle area and a dense grid of restaurants, shops and hotels.
  • The city is the practical base for the main island: airport access, car rental, buses north and ferries to nearby islands. It is busy and urban rather than beachy, but the food and night life are the strongest on the island.
  • Naha works as the first and last stop of most Okinawa trips, and as a base for day trips to the south and the central coasts.
