A practical English guide to Marugame in Kagawa: the castle, the udon culture and access from Takamatsu.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 08 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Marugame is a castle town on the Seto Inland Sea coast of Kagawa, west of Takamatsu. The castle keep still stands on a stone base above the centre, and the town below is known for udon and for the fans traditionally made here.
  • The city is compact and practical, with a station, harbour and streets that lead up to the castle park. It is quieter than Takamatsu and a good half-day for anyone travelling west across Shikoku.
  • Marugame is close to the Great Seto Bridge approach, which makes it a natural stop between Honshu and the rest of the island.
