Why visit

  • Okinawa City is the second largest city of the island, in the centre of the main island, north of Naha. It grew up around the bases after the war, and it has a character of its own: live music venues, markets, and a mixed culture of Okinawan and American influences.
  • The city is known for its music, with clubs and bars that have launched many Okinawan bands, and for its market streets, where food, clothes and household goods are sold in a dense grid. It is a working city rather than a resort, and it is a good place to see the island’s everyday life.
  • Okinawa City is on the expressway and the main roads north from Naha, which makes it a practical base for the centre of the island, and it is within reach of the coasts on both sides.
