Why visit

  • Anan is a city on the southern coast of Tokushima, where the mountains of Shikoku meet the Pacific. It is the largest city in the south of the prefecture, with a working port and a long coastline of small bays, capes and beaches.
  • The coast is the attraction: the road south towards Cape Kamoda and the Hiwasa area runs above the water, with views across to the islands and, on clear days, a strong sense of the open ocean. The area is quiet, with fishing villages and a few minshuku, and the sea is warm enough to swim from summer into autumn.
  • Anan is also a stop on the Mugi line, which runs along the coast from Tokushima, and it is close to the start of the pilgrimage routes that lead south towards Cape Muroto.
