A practical English guide to Kasaoka in Okayama: the island ferries, the Seto Inland Sea views, the ramen and access from Okayama and Hiroshima.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Kasaoka is a port town on the coast of western Okayama, facing the Seto Inland Sea, and it is the departure point for a small archipelago of islands. Ferries run from the harbour to Shiraishi, Kitagi and Manabe, where the pace drops to fishing villages, narrow lanes and hills above the water.
  • The town itself is known for two things: its ramen, a local style with a dark soy-based broth and thin noodles, and its connection to the sea. The harbour, the market and the waterfront give it a working character that is different from the resort islands further west.
  • Kasaoka is on the Sanyo main line and the Sanyo expressway, which makes it an easy stop between Okayama and Hiroshima, and a practical base for a day among the islands.
