Why visit

  • Muroto is a cape town at the south-eastern tip of Kochi, where Shikoku runs out into the Pacific. The land rises steeply from the sea, the roads curve around the headlands, and the ocean is visible from most of the town. It feels like the end of the island, because it nearly is.
  • The cape has two claims on travellers. One is religious: Hotsumisakiji, one of the temples on the Shikoku pilgrimage, sits above the cape and is said to have been founded by Kobo Daishi. The other is geological: the coast is part of a geopark, with raised marine terraces and rock formations that record the land being pushed up by tectonic movement.
  • Muroto is also a place to eat fish, watch the sunrise over the Pacific, and slow down. It is not a resort, and that is part of the appeal.
