A practical English guide to Hofu in Yamaguchi: the great Tenmangu shrine, the old temple town and access from Yamaguchi and Hiroshima.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Hofu is a city on the coast of Yamaguchi, west of Yamaguchi city and east of Shimonoseki, and it was a castle town of the Mori clan in the Edo period. Its centre is a grid of old streets between the sea and the hills, with temples, shrines and a few surviving merchant houses.
  • The city is best known for its Tenmangu shrine, one of the three great Tenmangu of Japan, which sits at the foot of a wooded hill and draws students and travellers throughout the year. Nearby are the old temple buildings of the Kokubun-ji, and the hill above the town has views over the coast.
  • Hofu is quiet and walkable, and it makes a good stop between Yamaguchi and Shimonoseki, with the sea and the old roads close at hand.
