Why visit
- Yanai is a small port town on the Seto Inland Sea in eastern Yamaguchi, and it preserves one of the best old merchant quarters in western Japan. The streets of Shirakabe, the white-walled district, are lined with wooden townhouses, storehouses and narrow lanes that once belonged to traders and shipping families.
- The town’s emblem is the goldfish lantern, a small paper lantern shaped like a fish, made here for generations and hung in rows during the summer festival. It is a modest, charming tradition that sums up the place: a working port that kept its old streets and its crafts.
- Offshore, the islands of the Seto Inland Sea are close enough for a ferry trip, and the coast road gives views across the water that are typical of this part of Japan: hills, islands and narrow straits.
