A practical English guide to Maniwa in Okayama: the Hiruzen highlands, Yubara onsen, the waterfalls and the access from Okayama and Yonago.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Maniwa is a large, mostly rural city in northern Okayama, made of valleys and highlands rather than a single town centre. It is known for three things: the Hiruzen highlands with their dairy farms and open views, the Yubara hot springs on the river, and a long list of waterfalls in the surrounding hills.
  • The scale is what surprises people. Maniwa covers a lot of ground, and driving between the highlands, the onsen and the valleys takes time. The reward is variety within one area: cool upland pasture in summer, hot springs beside a river, forest and water in every direction.
  • It is a good place for travellers who have already seen the famous stops of Okayama and want a quieter, greener side of the prefecture, with the Sea of Japan and the mountains of Tottori within reach.
