A practical English guide to Tsukuba in Ibaraki: the twin peaks of Mount Tsukuba, the research city and access from Tokyo by train.
Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).
Why visit
- Tsukuba is two places at once. At its centre is a planned science city, built from the 1960s around national research institutes and a university, with wide roads, green space and a very modern layout. On its western edge rises Mount Tsukuba, a pair of rocky peaks with shrines, a ropeway and one of the oldest pilgrimage routes in the region.
- The mountain is the reason most travellers come. It is low by Japanese standards but steep and rocky at the top, with views over the Kanto plain that reach Tokyo on clear days. Trails run up from the shrines at the foot, and a cable car and ropeway serve the summit area.
- The city itself is worth a day if you are interested in how a modern research town works, and it has good parks and a railway that connects it to Akihabara in under an hour.
