Why visit
- Murakami is a castle town in northern Niigata, between the mountains and the Japan Sea, and it has kept its old shape better than most. The streets below the castle hill are lined with temples, merchant houses and walls, and the town is small enough to walk from the station to the castle in half an hour.
- It is also salmon country. The Miomote river runs through the town, and the tradition of catching and preserving salmon goes back centuries, with a museum and restaurants devoted to it. In autumn and winter the dried and salted fish hangs in the shops.
- Murakami has a quiet, slightly severe atmosphere that comes from its history as a domain town on the edge of the snow country, and it is a good stop between Niigata and Yamagata.
