Planning Tomonoura in Hiroshima? This English guide covers the old port, the island ferry, and what to reconfirm.
Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 22 October 2026).
Why visit
- Tomonoura is a historic port in Fukuyama, Hiroshima, on the Seto Inland Sea. Ships waited here for the tide. The town is still a harbor, with a narrow point of land and islands just offshore.
- The walk is the visit: stone quays, a lighthouse point, old houses, and the view back to town from the water if the ferry is running.
- It is a small place. One unhurried half day is enough. Do not treat it as a city of attractions with separate tickets for everything.
Top places and highlights

The harbor
The port itself is the sight. Walk the quay, then the lanes one street inland. Homeishu, a herb liqueur, is the local specialty long associated with a brewery in the town. Taste it if you want. It is not the architecture.
Sensui Island
A city ferry links the Tomo ferry landing with Sensui Island. The tourism association has posted both cancellations and restarts for that boat, including in September 2026. If the island is the plan, reconfirm the day’s sailings that morning.
The crossing is about five minutes and the boat is run by Fukuyama City, so the fare and the sailing notice are on the city’s page rather than the tourism association’s. It is a foot passenger service, not a sightseeing cruise, and the island’s paths are the reason to go over.
Old houses
The Ota family house is one of the historic residences. The association posted a repair closure for it in June 2026. Other houses and temples may be viewable from the street only. Reconfirm what is open before you promise yourself an interior.
Food and drink
- Seafood and the local liqueur are the edible reasons to stop. Kitchens are small and can close between meal times.
- Eat before the last bus back to Fukuyama Station. The port is quiet in the evening.
Getting there and around
- Fukuyama is the Shinkansen stop. Tomo is a local bus ride from Fukuyama Station, not a stop on the bullet train. Reconfirm the last bus.
- Tomotetsu buses leave from stop 5 at the south exit of Fukuyama Station and take about 30 minutes to Tomo-no-ura, with a short walk from the stop into the old streets. They run at short intervals through the day, so the outbound trip is easy; the return is the one to check against your train.
- The town is walkable once you are there. A bicycle event uses the coast road, but a first visit does not need a bike.
- The island ferry, house interiors, and any temple hours are separate. Check the association news if a closure would ruin the plan.
Where to stay
- Fukuyama is the easy base, with the Shinkansen and more dinner options.
- A night in Tomo is for people who want the harbor after the day-trippers leave. Book it on purpose. Do not assume a room.
Best time to visit
- Spring and autumn are the comfortable walking seasons. Summer is hot on the quay, and the inland sea light is still the point.
- Seto festivals and cycling events fill some weekends. A weekday morning is the quieter harbor.
Practical tips
- Check the Sensui ferry the same morning. A posted restart can be followed by another cancellation.
- The town is compact and the lanes are residential. Keep to the public quay and the shops.
- Another Seto Inland Sea walk, farther west, is the Onomichi travel guide.
Suggested day-trip outline
- Shinkansen to Fukuyama, then the bus to Tomo.
- The quay, the point, and the island only if the ferry is running.
- Lunch, then the bus you already checked.
