A practical English guide to Esashi in Hokkaido: the merchant houses, the herring history, the coast and access from Hakodate.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Esashi is a small town on the Japan Sea coast of southern Hokkaido, and it was once one of the richest places on the island. In the nineteenth century the herring fishery made merchants wealthy, and they built houses with thick earthen walls, dark timber and storehouses behind them, some of which still stand.
  • The old streets are the reason to come. The town preserves a district of merchant houses, temples and shops, with narrow lanes running down to the sea, and the scale is small enough to walk in a couple of hours. Inland, the hills and the coast road give views across the water.
  • Esashi is also a fishing town, with squid and fish landed at the port, and it is close to Hakodate on the coast road, which makes it an easy half-day or overnight stop.
