A practical English guide to the Shakotan Peninsula in Hokkaido: Cape Kamui, the Shimamui coast, sea urchin and the drive from Otaru and Sapporo.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).

Why visit

  • The Shakotan Peninsula juts into the Japan Sea west of Otaru, and it is the most dramatic coastline in western Hokkaido. Cliffs drop straight into water that turns a deep, almost unnatural blue in summer, and the road runs along the edge of it, past fishing villages and headlands.
  • The two names most travellers know are Cape Kamui, a narrow ridge of rock with a shrine at the end, and the Shimamui coast, where a tunnel leads to a viewing platform above a sheer drop. Both are short walks rather than hikes, but the exposure and the colour of the water are what stay with you.
  • This is also a sea urchin coast. The uni from Shakotan is famous across Japan, and in summer the small ports serve it fresh. Outside the season, the towns are quiet and the driving is the point.
