Why visit

  • Kameyama is a small city in northern Mie, on the old Tokaido road between Nagoya and Kyoto. It was a castle town and a post town, and both layers survive: the castle hill with its stone walls and a reconstructed turret, and the streets below where travellers once stopped for the night.
  • The town is compact and quiet, with a handful of temples, old houses and a museum, and it is easy to walk in an hour or two. It sits in a valley of low mountains, with the Suzuka range to the west and the Ise plain to the east.
  • Kameyama is a stop on the Kansai main line and the Kisei line, which makes it convenient for travellers moving between Nagoya and Osaka, and it is close enough to the Suzuka circuit and the Ise coast for a short detour.
