A practical English guide to Maizuru in Kyoto Prefecture: the naval port history, the red brick warehouses, the seafood and the access from Kyoto and Osaka.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Maizuru is a port city on the Japan Sea coast of Kyoto Prefecture, far from the temples and crowds of the old capital. It grew as a naval base from the early twentieth century, and the red brick warehouses, wide quays and dockyard buildings still give the waterfront a military-industrial look that is unlike anywhere else in the region.
  • For travellers, the appeal is this overlap of history and working port. You can walk among the brick warehouses, look across the bay to the naval facilities, visit the museum that explains the city’s role in modern Japanese history, and eat fish landed the same day.
  • Maizuru is also a gateway: ferries and roads run north along the coast, and the city is a practical stop between Kyoto and the Sea of Japan.
