Why visit
- Myoko is a city in the mountains of southern Niigata, on the slopes below the peaks of Myoko and the surrounding range. It is one of the snowiest inhabited places in Japan, and that snow is the foundation of everything here: the ski resorts, the hot springs, the farmhouses with their steep roofs and the long winter.
- The area is made up of several hot spring districts and ski areas spread along the valley, connected by a small railway and mountain roads. In winter the slopes and the powder snow draw skiers from Tokyo and abroad; in summer the same valleys are green, with hiking, waterfalls and cool air.
- Myoko is also a place to eat well in a simple way: mountain vegetables, rice, soba and sake, served in inns that have been in the same family for generations.
