Why visit
- Kushimoto is the town at the southern tip of Honshu, where Wakayama runs out into the Pacific and the Kuroshio current passes close to shore. Cape Shionomisaki has a lighthouse and a view south with nothing but ocean, and the coast around it is rocky, exposed and full of unusual formations.
- The best known of these is Umikongo, a line of weathered rock pillars rising out of the sea, and the Hashigui-iwa rocks further north, which look like a row of bridge piers. The water is clear, the fish are abundant, and the town has a long history as a port and a place of exile.
- Kushimoto is a stop on the Kisei main line, and it is quiet outside the summer holidays. The combination of cape, rocks and seafood makes it a good two-night stop for travellers following the Wakayama coast.
