A practical English guide to Mihara in Hiroshima: the castle ruins, the harbour, the sake and access by shinkansen from Osaka and Hiroshima.
Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).
Why visit
- Mihara sits in the narrow coastal plain of eastern Hiroshima, where the Sanyo road meets the Seto Inland Sea. It was a castle town, then a post town, then a shinkansen stop, and each of those layers is still visible: stone walls on the hill, old streets below, and a harbour with islands just offshore.
- The castle ruins are the centre of the town, with a park, walls and a view over the roofs to the sea. Around them are temples, a compact shopping district and a handful of sake breweries, which use the good water and rice of the region.
- Mihara is not a destination in itself for most travellers, but it is a pleasant, unpretentious stop between Hiroshima and Okayama, with a ferry harbour for the islands and a shinkansen station that makes it easy to break a journey.
