Why visit
- Nachikatsuura is a small town on the coast of southern Wakayama, and it holds one of the great sights of Japan: Nachi falls, a single drop of water falling more than a hundred metres out of a forested cliff, with a pagoda and a shrine above it. The falls are the object of worship at Kumano Nachi Taisha, one of the three Kumano shrines.
- The town is also a stop on the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes, and the paths through the surrounding mountains are part of why the area was designated a World Heritage site. Walking part of the route, even a short section, is the best way to understand the landscape.
- Down at the coast, Katsuura port is a major tuna harbour, and the town’s restaurants serve it fresh. The combination of pilgrimage and fishing port is unusual, and it makes the place feel lived in rather than staged.
