A practical English guide to Uonuma in Niigata: the rice fields, the sake, the snow country and access from Tokyo by shinkansen.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Uonuma is a city in the mountains of southern Niigata, and its name is almost synonymous with rice. Koshihikari grown here is among the most prized in Japan, and the reason is the landscape: steep valleys, cold water from the mountains, and a long, snowy winter that rests the fields.
  • The city is a long, thin strip of villages along the Uono river, with the mountains rising on both sides. In summer the rice fields fill the valley floor; in winter the same fields disappear under some of the deepest snow in the country.
  • For travellers, Uonuma is about food and landscape rather than sights. There are sake breweries, farm shops, hot springs and mountain roads, and the shinkansen stops at Urasa make it easy to reach from Tokyo.
