A practical English guide to the Oga Peninsula in Akita: the Namahage tradition, the coast and hot springs, with access from Akita city.
Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).
Why visit
- The Oga Peninsula sticks out into the Japan Sea west of Akita city, and it is one of the most distinctive corners of Tohoku. Its name is bound to the Namahage: figures in straw capes and demon masks who visit houses on New Year’s Eve to warn children against laziness, a custom that has become a symbol of the region.
- The peninsula itself is green and hilly, with a rugged northern coast, viewpoints over the sea and several hot spring districts. It is small enough to drive around in a day, and quiet enough that the scenery, rather than the crowds, is the attraction.
- Oga is also where some of the oldest layers of Japanese folklore are still performed rather than displayed. The Namahage museum and the village-based traditions are the places to see it, but the peninsula’s shrines and stone monuments carry the same atmosphere.
