A practical English guide to Tobe in Ehime: the Tobe-yaki potteries, the museums, the workshops and access from Matsuyama.
Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).
Why visit
- Tobe is a small town in the hills just south of Matsuyama, and it has been a pottery town for more than two centuries. Tobe-yaki, the local ware, is known for its pale blue-white glaze and its hand-painted designs, and the town is full of kilns, workshops and shops that sell it.
- The scale is what makes it pleasant. This is not a museum town with a single attraction but a working craft district: streets of small factories and showrooms, a ceramics museum, and workshops where you can paint a piece and have it fired.
- Tobe is close enough to Matsuyama for a half-day, and it combines well with the city’s castle and hot springs. For anyone interested in Japanese ceramics, it is one of the most accessible pottery towns in the country.
