A practical English guide to Shizukuishi in Iwate: the ski resort and onsen, the views of Mount Iwate, and access from Morioka and Tokyo.
Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).
Why visit
- Shizukuishi is a valley town west of Morioka, sitting under Mount Iwate and Mount Kurakake, and it is best known for two things: a large ski resort and a spread of hot springs. Outside winter it is farmland, forest and onsen, with the mountain filling the view from almost everywhere.
- The town is not a tourist village in the usual sense. It is a place where people ski, soak and eat, and where the scenery does most of the work. Mount Iwate’s bare, ridged upper slopes look unlike the greener peaks further south, and the light on them changes through the day.
- Because it is close to Morioka, Shizukuishi works as a base for the wider area: the city’s noodle shops and craft workshops, the onsen up the valley, and the mountain roads in summer.
