A practical English guide to Usuki in Oita: the Usuki stone buddhas, the castle ruins, the old streets and access from Oita and Miyazaki.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Usuki is a small city on the coast of eastern Oita, and it holds two things that are worth the trip. The first is the Usuki stone buddhas: groups of Buddhist figures carved into soft volcanic cliffs, some of them more than a thousand years old, standing in the open air in a quiet valley south of the centre.
  • The second is the old castle town itself. Usuki was a domain seat, and its samurai district, with walled houses and stone lanes, is one of the best preserved in Kyushu. The castle ruins on the hill above add the view.
  • Usuki is a practical stop on the Nippo main line between Oita and Miyazaki, close enough for a day trip but quiet enough to feel removed from the bigger cities.
