A practical English guide to Ryugasaki in Ibaraki: the canal, the old temples, the cycling routes and access from Tokyo and Narita.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Ryugasaki is a small city in southern Ibaraki, on the edge of the Kanto plain, and it grew up around a canal that connected the region’s farms to the Tone river and beyond. The canal is still there, with paths along the water, and it gives the town a shape that most commuter cities have lost.
  • The city has a handful of old temples, including Raigo-in, and a quiet centre with a few shops and cafes. It is flat and easy to cycle, and the routes along the canal and the fields are popular with local riders.
  • Ryugasaki is close to Narita airport and within reach of Tokyo, which makes it a practical stop on the way in or out of the country, and a good place to see the ordinary landscape of the Kanto plain.
