A practical English guide to Ashikaga in Tochigi: the Ashikaga school, Bannaji temple, the flower park and access from Tokyo.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Ashikaga is a city in south-western Tochigi that was a centre of learning and power long before Tokyo existed. Its school, the Ashikaga Gakko, is often described as the oldest educational institution in Japan, and the building and its grounds are still there, at the foot of a wooded hill.
  • The city’s other name is wisteria. The Ashikaga Flower Park, a short train ride outside the centre, is famous for its great wisteria trellises, which flower in late spring and draw visitors from across the country. In the centre, Bannaji temple and the old streets give the city a quieter historical layer.
  • Ashikaga is an easy day trip from Tokyo, and it works well as a pair of contrasts: the scholarly, stone-walled calm of the school and temple, and the colour and crowds of the flower park.
