A practical English guide to Shinjo in Yamagata: the summer festival, the Mogami river country and access from Yamagata and Akita.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Shinjo is a city in the northern part of Yamagata, where the Mogami river runs through a wide basin between mountains. It is a farming and festival town, and its August matsuri is one of the loudest in Tohoku, with floats, drums and dancing through the streets for three days.
  • Outside festival time, Shinjo is a quiet place with a small castle site, temples and a museum, and a landscape of rice fields and orchards. The surrounding mountains have hot springs and ski areas, and the Mogami river is one of the great rivers of the region.
  • Shinjo is on the Ou main line and the Yamagata shinkansen, which makes it an easy stop between Yamagata and Akita, and a practical base for the northern part of the prefecture.
