A practical English guide to Kiryu in Gunma: the textile heritage, the craft workshops, the shrines and the access from Tokyo and Takasaki.
Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).
Why visit
- Kiryu has been a weaving town for centuries, and it still looks like one: long, narrow streets, old storehouses and workshops, and a river running through the middle of a city that grew up around cloth. It sits at the eastern edge of Gunma, close enough to Tokyo for a day trip and far enough to feel like a different world.
- The town’s textile history is not presented as a single museum visit. It is spread across small workshops, a textile hall, shops selling fabric and products, and the ordinary streets where the industry was organised. For travellers interested in craft, that is the appeal: you see how a trade shaped a place.
- Kiryu also has the ordinary pleasures of a Japanese provincial city: shrines, a riverside walk, local noodle shops and a compact centre that is easy to walk.
