Why visit

  • Ena is a city in eastern Gifu, in the hills above the Kiso river, on the old road between Nagoya and the Kiso valley. It is a country town of small valleys, farms and forest, and it has a castle site on a hill above the centre.
  • The city is known for the gorge of the Kiso river nearby and for its old streets, which grew up around the post road. The town merges into Iwamura, a preserved castle town with wooden houses, and the whole area is quiet compared with the better-known stops of the region.
  • Ena is on the JR Chuo main line, close to Nakatsugawa and within reach of Nagoya, which makes it an easy stop on the way to the Kiso valley.
